Discover the easy, effective ways to take great photos...
Tired of coming back from holiday or a day trip with a camera fill of images, only to find they're even worse than the last ones your took? You're not alone! Because digital photography has come a long way, now ANYONE can take great photos...
Good photographs are everywhere...
When you look around (in magazines, advertising boards, your daughter's wedding photos etc.) you see the sorts of photographs that YOU would like to take, if only you knew how. The good news is that while it is true that the best photographers are talented people, anyone can learn to take good photos. And you don't have to have the latest and most expensive cameras to do so!
Many of the top photographers learnt their craft by trial and error, and taking lots of photos. What many of them say is that you don't need a degree or spend 100s of pounds or dollars and years on courses to learn to take good photos. You just need to know the simple, basic rules and it becomes much easier.
One if the biggest problems facing amateur photographers today is that because it is so easy to take a photo, and the camera seems to do everything automatically, you think that there's something wrong with YOU when the pictures aren't perfect every time. This is not - no camera will take perfect photos in all conditions without some setting up first.
The truth is that ALL cameras, even the most basic (including many mobile phones), NEED TO BE SET UP CORRECTLY to be able to take a good shot. The way you set up the camera will depend on the type of subject, the lighting conditions, the type of camera you have and the result you desire.
The basics that you should know about
As just mentioned, there is some basic knowledge everyone should know before taking photos:
What to look for when buying a camera. |
How to set the white balance. |
Depth of field and depth of focus. |
How zooming in and out affect the depth of focus and field. |
How to make your subject stand out. |
How lighting affects the final image. |
How and when to use flash. |
How to set the camera shutter speed. |
The difference between Portrait, Glamour, Landscape and other types of photography, and the different equipment required. |
If you're not sure about any of the above (and a good course will tell you about all of them and more) then you will definitely benefit from some basic tuition in photography. The basics of photography are relevant to Portrait, Landscape, Fashion, Wedding and all types of photography. You CAN learn these from magazines, but the problem with magazines is that they tend to be monthly and they only concentrate on one or two things each month - they don't tell you how to take photos, starting form the basics, every month - you'd need to subscribe to them for years to get that sort of information from them.
Glossy books on photography tend be a better buy (You've probably got a few on the shelf now?), they tend to show off a lot of great photos but often fall down on one area or another.
Never miss those special moments again
If you have children or grandchildren, or special occasions to photograph
(weddings, birthdays etc.) you don't want to wait years learning to take a
good photographs by trial and error, what you need is a good source NOW
because if you miss those moments you will never get a second chance.
The good news is that there are several excellent sources of information that you can get you hands on almost immediately. Before you choose a product you should decide on the type of photography you are most interested in - you don't have to stick to that type of photographer forever, but it will make it easier to learn if you learn one type at a time. Bear in mind that expert photographers tend to specialise in one area and gain a reputation for being an expert in that particular field.
We've added links to our favourite sources to the right of this page. You can also subscribe to our FREE newsletter/e-course below - Each week we send out a letter with details about one of the points listed above, together with new of the latest offering in photography from the major manufacturers.
